There really are mountains!!
Since I arrived, you couldn't see very far because of Zürich being trapped in a valley river belt, so there's always a lot of fog and clouds and stuff. Anyway, so we've had a bit of wind in the last two days (and temperatures around 15 C in the evening), cleared away the crap. The monster hills surrounding Zürich aren't that far away, and I could see the real mountains behind them. I spent a couple of hours today (Saturday) looking at them and taking pictures.
So if you're a professor or assistant or some other higher life form around here, you use 'ean' mail and the students aren't allowed to. hahahahahahaha. The students here don't know how lucky they are.
I think this place is sort-of like what I think UofT is like. There are lots of different departments that take care of bunches of computers. I take care of the 'Departement Informatik' computers. I'm very gradually finding out who the other sys-admins are.
Leather pants seem to be plentiful around here, and I found eyeball-juice (CIBA lenSEPT) just like in Canada. Almost everyone smokes. Movies are very popular and expensive here. CDs are cheap. I eat alot of Italian food. No desserts. Probably good for my hypoglycemia. A bottle of coke is around $2 CDN in a restaurant, < $1 from a machine.
It must be the culture around here that everyone (except a Canadian female here), always knock and enter a closed doored office 3 nano-seconds later. What's the bloody point of giving me 3 nano-seconds warning that you're gonna barge into my office!?! Everyone does this! Or maybe I just never noticed in Canada before with my previous life-style...
So I'm consultant, operator, consultant, sys-admin and consultant here.
I also seem to do alot of consulting.
I do real work at nights and on weekends. there's alot of stuff here
that needs to be cleaned up. I found thousands of files with world
write on them. Many on the root partition.
I like the part where I get to blow away mischevious users.
To Computer network Geeks:
So rumor is we may be on the Internet within a couple of weeks.
Guess what!?! On all my computers and the ones I've been able to check
that arent mine, the broadcast address has the host part set to 0.
hahahahahaha. And if I fix mine, ethernet storms will break out throughout
ETH. And we're going on the Internet. hahahaha. I wonder who's running
the show around here....
And all our diskless Sun clients are (were)
running in.routed - with 3 servers
on the same subnet. If you don't know what that means, you don't wanna...
Well, its 12:50 am Saturday night (Sunday morn?). I guess i should go home... There will be nothing open to eat now. I'll be dead by tomorrow morning.
